What We Know

Dogs produce proteins which people can be allergic to. Can f1 is the major protein produced by dogs.

Cats produce a protein allergen (Fel d 1) which people can be allergic to.

Studies have looked at the amounts of protein found in scrapings from a dogs coat.  Labradors, Poodles, Yorkshires, Cocker Spaniels, Griffon, German Shepherds, Pyrenean Shepherds were all tested. Each breed had a large variation in amount of protein measured. This suggests that the amount of protein that is produced varies from dog to dog, and not necessarily from breed to breed.
WHAT WE DON'T KNOW

Do certain breeds produce more protein allergen?
Does age, sex, size, time of the year affect the amount of allergen an animal produces?
How much allergen does an individual dog produce?
Is there any way to decrease the amount of allergen your dog or cat produces?

The Pet Allergy Institute will begin to answer these questions.

By accumulating the answers to these questions we will have more knowledge and a better understanding of how to approach, treat, and prevent pet allergies.
